Academic work

My academic background is in sociology, disability studies, and gender studies. At the age of 18, I began lecturing at universities in Iceland. Initially, my lectures focused mostly on my experiences as a disabled young person, but as my education progressed, I incorporated more theoretical content into my teaching. Over the past few years, my academic teaching has centered around disability, intersectionality, micro aggression, and sexuality.

For my bachelor's degree, I studied sociology with additional minor in gender studies at the University of Iceland. As part of an Erasmus+ student exchange program, I also had the opportunity to study at Manchester Metropolitan University. I graduated in 2016 and in 2019 I pursued a research-based master's program in sociology at the University of Akureyri. The goal of that research was to shed light on microaggressions that are directed to disabled people’s gender and sexual identities. The main finings indicates that one of the manifestations of microaggression is the idea that disabled people are infantilized or seen as asexual. The message that participants receive is that they should be grateful to have a partner thus they have little room to make demands or set boundaries. When expressing their sexuality, it is often accompanied with the feeling of shame.
